LNU Wildnews Bulletins are available on: http://rogerparsons.info/bulletinportal.html Each address contains the relevant date. Note: Views expressed by contributors are not necessarily those of the Lincolnshire Naturalists Union or any associated organisations. Please make contact via the LNU Website: http://www.lnu.org/ or e-mail wildlifenews@lnu.org, or contact the Editor to join up and contribute articles or reports. [Or cancel!] E-mail: rparsons@enterprise.net ============================================ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** New System *** Thanks to all who responded to my invitation to express preference for ways to receive the Bulletin. It was an equal split between Webpage and email. This weekend I am trying a new way of delivering the Bulletin to you in an attempt to please as many readers as possible. I hope I do. 1. I shall post the full Bulletin on the Portal. You can visit this any time you choose. 2. I shall then remove the lengthy regular list of useful contacts etc. from the email version. [You will still be able to find this on each web Bulletin if you want it.] This will give a leaner email to send out, speedier to send and easier to scan through too. Then you can delete your bulletins as you wish, knowing that you can always find the originals on the portal if you need to. I hope this does the trick. Fingers crossed for the mailing. Roger *** Hotmail-fails and Talk21-fails *** Hotmail users will not be getting the Bulletin by email or thank yours for reports because their mail is not getting through. Something to do with T-mobile being blocked by Hotmail. If I seem to go silent on you, this may be the reason. I seem to get your emails OK. Sorry. You will have to use the Portal until a solution is found. Roger Stop Press: I notice that a number of Talk21 emails have failed too. I shall probably move from T-mobile next week which I am told should solve the problem. R. *** Leonid Meteors, better year? *** Heads up for the Leonid meteor shower peaking 17th to 18th November. Paul Money's NightScenes is one of the handiest sources of astronomy information. Paul tells you what to look out for each month and explains how and where to observe interesting things like comets, the planets, stars and deep space objects. I get my cues for meteor showers from Paul's book and one of my autumn jobs is writing the coming year's events into my new diary. You can order NightScenes 2010 via Paul's website, www.astrospace.co.uk A Christmas stocking filler for the naturalist who has everything? *** Moth Publications *** Rex Johnson writes: Some months ago I donated to the LNU a run of Transactions from the earliest issues to the end of the 1970s. These were mainly in leather bound volumes which I purchased before I took over as moth recorder. I presume these transactions are now available for members to consult in the LNU library. They were absolutely invaluable when Joe and I put together the "Butterflies and Larger Moths of Lincolnshire" book in 1983, and when I later tackled the micros and the LNU published my second book in 1996. It was astounding how good these early records were at a time when identification must have been considerably more difficult than today. I always considered the early volumes to be the rarest and hardest to obtain, so I was surprised to find them available online to download for free. Bulletin readers may be interested to know that anyone with a computer can visit: http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=Lincolnshire%20AND%20mediatype%3Atexts Scroll down page one as far as the entries for the LNU Transactions and away you go. These can be read online or downloaded as PDF files (best) or as EPUB files to enable them to be read on an electronic e-book reader. Also they can be downloaded as 'full text' as much smaller files. These however have been read by an optical character reader program, and some transcriptions are bizarre. There are some wonderful records here for many orders, and some superb Lincolnshire material generally for anyone with historical interest in the County. *** Harlequins *** To report your sightings: www.harlequin-survey.org/ *** Gainsborough Group LWT Event *** Linda Woodward writes: Rewilding by Kevin James - LWT's warden for mid-Lincs. Wednesday 18th November, 7.30pm Morton Village Hall (just north of Gainsborough) Bird food on sale, raffle and other fundraising items A donation of £1.00 includes refreshments People of all ages, Wildlife Trust members or not, are welcome. *** RSPB South Lincs Local Group - November Events *** Roger Carrott writes: Thursday 19th November at 7-30 p.m. - Illustrated Talk at the Sam Newsom Music Centre, Boston, entitled "Britain's Wonderful Wildlife". In a change to the published programme, the Group are pleased to introduce the guest speaker, Richard Revells, who is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and was attracted to wildlife photography about 40 years ago, by an interest in butter flies. His interests now include a much wider range of wildlife, and as he travels the country, he takes photos of wildlife as diverse as birds to bugs and snakes to mammals. Richard also has many photos of wild flowers, scenery and the varying weather conditions to be found throughout the country and will take the audience on a journey using these many varied and beautiful images. Admission is £2-00 for members, £3-50 for non members, with children being admitted at half price. Light refreshments will be available during a mid session interval and RSPB Sale goods will also be on display. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. RSPB WASH Reserves - Frampton Marsh and Freiston Shore http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/f/framptonmarsh/index.asp http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/f/freistonshore/index.asp Paul French Recent sightings Lincs Wash Reserves October 2009 Frampton Marsh Fairly dry conditions resulted in lower than optimal water levels, and consequently bird numbers were down. Highlights were a Great Skua that cruised over the reedbed on 29th and 31st, up to four Green Sandpipers on the reedbed throughout the month, a Spotted Redshank on the 3rd-9th and up to two Little Stints on 7th-22nd. Hunting the marsh on a regular basis were two Hen Harriers, four Marsh Harriers, two Merlins and a Peregrine. Up to 280 Teals and 200 Wigeon had arrived by the months end. Freiston Shore The highlight for a lucky few has been a highly mobile Great White Egret flying through the reserve on occasion, last seen on 31st when it flew south. Offshore, 18 Pomarine Skuas were off Cut End on the 1st, followed by at least 24 on the 16th. Also on the 16th were a Slavonian Grebe, 2 Puffins, 3 Manx Shearwaters, 4 Arctic Skuas, 2 Great Skuas, 20 Little Gulls, 92 Kittiwakes, 8 Red-throated Divers and 10 Common Scoters. The eclipse drake King Eider was last seen off the reserve on the 16th, but was then seen further north off Leverton on the 18th. A Crossbill flew south on the 9th. Visible migration at the end of the month produced small numbers of Siskin, Lesser Redpoll, Brambling and Chaffinch all going south, and flocks of Redwings and Fieldfares finally arrived on 26th-27th. Up to four Pale-bellied Brent Geese were with the increasing numbers of Dark- bellieds on the 18th. Raptors were represented by at least 2 Hen Harriers, 3 Marsh Harriers and 2 Merlins. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen "in flower".] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
