Next meeting: Saturday, November 14, 2009 Williwaws & Wildlife Hunting for Aliens in Antarctic South Georgia A presentation by Dr Roger Key of his travels in South Georgia. *** Harlequins *** To report your sightings: www.harlequin-survey.org/ *** Donna Nook Action *** Went to Donna Nook on Monday, 2nd November at about 10am. A perfect day, clear with little wind. Only a few cars in the Stonebridge Car Park, and a dozen or so fellow seal watchers, so a good time to go. An estimated 100 seals up, plus 25 pups. Watched one being born. A starling flock put on an acrobatic display across the rookery. If you can avoid weekends it spreads the load and gives you a better visit. Roger *** Mute Swans *** Anne Goodall writes: Mute Swans: one of the current unknown areas concerns the birds which use the Witham fens in winter; where do these birds come from - are they the birds currently on the river and delphs or do they come from further afield? In either case, what triggers them to leave the watercourses and move out onto the fields. Also, they may graze on the fens by day, but where do they roost at night? A drive around the upper fens on 4th November showed only a family and a pair, both known from the summer, but as a consolation prize, there were at least 2000 golden plover on Branston Fen, in a single huge flock, spread over several fields; some 3,000-5,000 lapwings on Potterhanworth Fen, in 4-5 flocks (and ca 1000 starlings feeding with them; 15 whooper swans on Bardney SBF settling ponds, and two barn owls hunting along the drains. So it was worth turning out after all! *** Generous offer - SatNav Users Please Read *** Brian Cocksedge writes: I have typed in all the Lincolnshire and Norfolk Wildlife Trust Reserves and saved them as Garmin and TomTom compatable files for uploading to Sat Navs as Points of Intrest (POI's). The RSPB include POI's on their website. I would be willing for readers to email me with 'Sat Nav' in the subject line and details whether the Garmin or TomTom version is required. They would have to consult their sat nav manual on how to upload the files that I will send them. Unfortunately we recorded neither Fieldfare nor Redwing. Over the years we have come to expect only small numbers as these birds tend to overfly the area, which is a pity as there are large numbers of windfall apples lining the ground, which would make good feeding. The Blackbirds that were in evidence a few weeks ago seemed to have moved on and Greenfinches, which we found in good numbers in September and early October, were totally absent. So too, were Chaffinches, though a small flock of Tree Sparrows was present, with a charm of Goldfinches. We flushed a Woodcock, but Goldcrests which we regard as a certainly in November were absent. They seem exceptionally late this year. The only one of five cygnets to survive this year has manage to extricate itself safely from the small pond where it was born. One of the adults was not so fortunate and flew into the surrounding barbed wire fence last week. We had good views of a Sparrowhawk, but a very vocal Great Spotted Woodpecker managed to keep out of sight. The usual Green Sandpiper rose noisily, flushing a Cormorant, which is quite unusual here and a Kingfisher put in a flashing appearance, but on the whole it was the most disappointing day for several months. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. Highlights were a Great Skua that cruised over the reedbed on 29th and 31st, up to four Green Sandpipers on the reedbed throughout the month, a Spotted Redshank on the 3rd-9th and up to two Little Stints on 7th-22nd. Hunting the marsh on a regular basis were two Hen Harriers, four Marsh Harriers, two Merlins and a Peregrine. Up to 280 Teals and 200 Wigeon had arrived by the months end. Freiston Shore The highlight for a lucky few has been a highly mobile Great White Egret flying through the reserve on occasion, last seen on 31st when it flew south. Offshore, 18 Pomarine Skuas were off Cut End on the 1st, followed by at least 24 on the 16th. Also on the 16th were a Slavonian Grebe, 2 Puffins, 3 Manx Shearwaters, 4 Arctic Skuas, 2 Great Skuas, 20 Little Gulls, 92 Kittiwakes, 8 Red-throated Divers and 10 Common Scoters. The eclipse drake King Eider was last seen off the reserve on the 16th, but was then seen further north off Leverton on the 18th. A Crossbill flew south on the 9th. Visible migration at the end of the month produced small numbers of Siskin, Lesser Redpoll, Brambling and Chaffinch all going south, and flocks of Redwings and Fieldfares finally arrived on 26th-27th. Up to four Pale-bellied Brent Geese were with the increasing numbers of Dark- bellieds on the 18th. Raptors were represented by at least 2 Hen Harriers, 3 Marsh Harriers and 2 Merlins. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen "in flower".] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
