Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Finding the Bulletins *** LNU Wildnews Bulletins are available on: http://rogerparsons.info/bulletinportal.html Note: Each address contains the relevant date for that particular Bulletin. e.g. bulletin2009jul26.txt If you spot any typos, please let me know. Keep those vital reports coming. Thanks. Roger *** LNU Events *** Indoor Meetings are held on Saturdays at the Whisby Education Centre, Whisby Nature Park, Moor Lane, Thorpe on the Hill, Lincoln and start at 2pm. For LNU meetings also see www.lnu.org/events.php All welcome. Next meeting: Saturday, November 14, 2009 Williwaws & Wildlife Hunting for Aliens in Antarctic South Georgia A presentation by Dr Roger Key of his travels in South Georgia. *** Bardney Limewoods NNR - records needed! See Section 6 below *** If driving or exploring in the "Bermuda Triangle" between Bardney, Wragby and Langworth, dust off your Landranger 121 map and look up the following locations. Chambers Farm Wood; College Wood, Cocklode & Great West Woods, Hardy Gang Wood, Newball Wood, Scotgrove Wood, Southrey Wood, Wickenby Wood. All of these are part of the unique Limewoods landscape, with their characteristic botany and associated animal species. What is better than a woodland in autumn or early winter? It would be great if you can try to gather some records for the Bulletin. A flush of fungi is underway following the rain, tracks and signs of mammals may be seen, even if you do not actually get a sighting. Winter visitors arrive every day, e.g. redwings and fieldfares, and many species of birds of prey make the limewoods their home. Let us know what you find. *** Harlequins *** Harlequin ladybirds may well try to come into your house to hibernate. We had 50 flying and crawling on the outside of the house this week. Use the following website to report your records and drop a note to me for the Bulletin, please. The records for Lincolnshire look a bit thin on their distribution map. It would be good to fill in a few gaps. Harlequin Ladybird Survey To report your sightings: www.harlequin-survey.org/ *** Lincoln Area Swan Study *** Anne Goodall writes: The LASS, which is now nearly a year old, currently has two main strands; steadily pulling together the available information from past and present well-watched areas, and carrying out larger-scale censuses to look at exactly where the swans are, and what they are doing, over the whole area through the year. The latter is a huge job, and couldn't happen without the help of the various WeBS teams who cover the main waters. However this still leaves certainly tens, perhaps hundreds of smaller sites and particularly drains and delphs not being watched, more help is therefore always needed. Right now, most families are probably still in their natal territories though some are beginning to split up. Most pairs will stay in these territories all winter and may allow their young to stay for a while, but most of this year's cygnets will be drifting towards their winter quarters from next month. This is a critical time, and the more help we can get with recording it, the more we will understand. Specifically, if you regularly see a swan family, please note and record how many cygnets there are on each occasion, and whether the parents are protective, ignore them, or are turning aggressive. Especially record when the young leave, and if possible where they go, or at least the direction they take. Similarly, if you live near or visit an area used by wintering swans, please watch for wintering flocks beginning to appear and record when they come, how many, and what crops they use. All records can be sent to the bulletin: it would be great if we could have a swan report section every week. I will try and pull these records together once a month or so, but its up to you to provide them first... [Editor adds: as ever, it is reports that make all the difference. Roger] *** Grimsby & Cleethorpes LWT *** Carolyn Lovely writes: Monday 9th November 2009 the group will be learning more about climate change at their indoor meeting entitled "Climate & Wildlife - How can we help?" by speaker Anne Goodhall who runs Ecological Services Ltd at Lincoln. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and takes place in the Banqueting Room of Grimsby Town Hall. Admission £2.00. Trust stall, raffle and refreshments available. All are welcome. Contact Jennie Redpath - 01472 502858 for further details. Grimsby & Cleethorpes LWT On Saturday 14th November the group have organised a bird walk along Cleethorpes foreshore with walk leader John Nelson. Please meet at the Discovery Centre near the Boating Lake, Kings Road, Cleethorpes at 9am. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear. For further details please ring 01472 235922 *** RSPB South Lincs Local Group - November Events *** Roger Carrott writes: Wednesday 4th November, at 7-30 p.m. - Illustrated Talk at the Town Hall, Spilsby, organised jointly with the Lincs Wildlife Trust (Spilsby), and entitled "The Natural Quarry". The guest speaker, David Boag, has a reputation as a lively and entertaining speaker, who has entertained many other groups with his beautifully illustrated talks. David published his first book in 1982 and has been involved as author or photographer in 15 other natural history books since then. He has also worked in both TV and radio as advisor or presenter on various natural history programmes. On his first visit to the quarry in the depths of winter, David admits that it was unlikely he would find any wildlife. However, as the year unfolded and the seasons changed, he was delighted by the wealth of colourful and interesting subjects that surrounded him. The most spectacular birds, including nesting peregrine falcons and ravens, will be the subject of his talk as will all other aspects of the wildlife to be found in the quarry. When presented at Boston in 2008, David's talk was rated as outstanding. Admission is £2-00 for all. Light refreshments will be available during a mid session interval. Wednesday 11th November at 7-30 p.m. - Illustrated Talk at St Nicholas Church Hall, The Vista, Spalding, organised jointly with the Lincs Wildlife Trust (Spalding), and entitled "Wildlife of the Wash". The guest speaker, Neil Smith, local wildlife photographer and artist, is making a welcome return by popular request and will be presenting, in his own inimitable way, the wildlife to be found in and around our local area of The Wash using many of his own images. Neil's talks in the past have proved to be very entertaining and this current event is one not to be missed. Admission is £2-00 for all. Light refreshments will be available during a mid session interval. Thursday 19th November at 7-30 p.m. - Illustrated Talk at the Sam Newsom Music Centre, Boston, entitled "Britain's Wonderful Wildlife". In a change to the published programme, the Group are pleased to introduce the guest speaker, Richard Revells, who is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and was attracted to wildlife photography about 40 years ago, by an interest in butter flies. His interests now include a much wider range of wildlife, and as he travels the country, he takes photos of wildlife as diverse as birds to bugs and snakes to mammals. Richard also has many photos of wild flowers, scenery and the varying weather conditions to be found throughout the country and will take the audience on a journey using these many varied and beautiful images. Admission is £2-00 for members, £3-50 for non members, with children being admitted at half price. Light refreshments will be available during a mid session interval and RSPB Sale goods will also be on display. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. News from Bardney Limewoods NNR http://microsites.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Limewoods/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reports from the following locations will now be posted here to give an overview of Limewoods ecology. The NNR includes the following sites: Chambers Farm Wood (please detail specfic area when reporting e.g. Ivy Wood, Little Scrubbs Meadow etc); College Wood, Cocklode & Great West Woods, Hardy Gang Wood, Newball Wood, Scotgrove Wood, Southrey Wood, Wickenby Wood Other woods included in the NNR but without public access: Stainfield Wood; Stainton & Fulnetby Woods (access by public bridleway only) Adrian Royle's website for photos of species from the Limewoods. http://www.flickr.com/photos/adiroyle/sets/72157616635241942/ Dormice Anne Goodall writes: After the disappointment of last year's cold, wet summer, with monitoring records decidedly poor, this summer's checks have seen a most reassuring turn-around. Nest-box checks are carried out monthly from April to October, between 15th and 25th of each month, in line with the SRP national protocol. (The Species Recovery Programme forms part of the UK BAP for this species.) This year produced not a single blank month, and in the second half of the season up to 6 animals were recorded every month, with young at all stages found in different parts of the survey area. A male with a missing eye and only half a tail reminds us that dormice are feisty little beasts, though whether this one had been in a territorial battle or had narrowly evaded a would-be predator we don't know. He was a good weight though, so had every chance of surviving. As usual, other small mammals were also found in the boxes, but a box with seven full-grown woodmice has to be a record; it must have been a real squeeze in there, and there wasn't even room for a nest! No lesser shrews were found this year though, and, thank goodness, for once no weasels. In September and October we also carried out nut-hunts, and we are now expanding these into the surrounding woods, establishing baselines for the expected spread. Again woodmouse-eaten nuts dominate the collections, but the next nut just might always have been opened by a dormouse... We now really need to increase the number of volunteers involved, and this winter we would like to start a local Dormouse Group. Three workshops are already planned, monthly from January-March, to build, renovate and replace the existing boxes ready for the spring, and hopefully to open up some new survey areas. Details on the next Limewoods Events booklet: everybody is very welcome to come along and get involved. Old clothes for the workshop sessions, thorn-proof gear and gardening gloves for the woods, and hot drinks provided! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. Sending in reports to Roger Parsons ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The purpose of the Bulletin is to encourage biological recording in Lincolnshire using modern Information and Communication Technology. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
