Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Finding the Bulletins *** LNU Wildnews Bulletins are available on: http://rogerparsons.info/bulletinportal.html Note: Each address contains the relevant date. Please keep sending in reports/articles/news. Thanks. Roger *** The Lincolnshire Show *** Ian Macalpine-Leny: Those of you who werent able to visit the LNU stand in The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trusts tent missed a rare opportunity to handle privet, elephant, lime and pine hawk moths as part of a display that contrasted the old method of setting and studying dead specimens with studying live moths that had come to a moth trap in the county two nights earlier. It was wonderful to see the delight on the faces of all age groups as they were able to study these beautiful moths at such close quarters, and one lucky family were even able to help with releasing them at the end of the second day of the Show. The Trust yet again won a very well deserved Award, and it was quite something to see a privet hawk and an elephant hawk perched on John Lockwoods bowler hat when he came to present it. *** LNU Meetings, ALL WELCOME *** For details of all 2009 LNU Field meetings see section 12 below or visit www.lnu.org/events.php Saturday, July 04, 2009 Crowle Moor Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Reserve 12.00 for 13.00 start. Meet at visitors car park at SE756 137. Take minor road leading NW from Crowle village. See Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust website for details http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/reserves/nr/reserve.php?mapref=12. Later meeting at 20.30 for bats and moths. Habitats: Heathland, mire and willow scrub. Leader: Brian Hedley 01427 718320 brian_hedley@hotmail.com with Colin Smith later. *** Glow Worms *** Stuart Britton: Are you aware of any surveys in the county recently for Glow Worms? Last week (18th June) I visited Chambers Farm Wood and found 19 females and on 21st June found a further four at Linwood Warren. I have been told of recent records at Messingham Sand Quarry and 2 larvae found at Birchwood Nature Park in 2005. Has anyone any other confirmed sightings in the county as I suspect there must be many suitable sites? *** Bumblebee Deaths *** Brian Eke: My boss posed a query to me the other day. He is finding a lot of extremely dozy/lethargic and dead large type bumblebees in his garden in Almond Crescent off Brant Road, Lincoln. I was wondering if you had heard of anything affecting bees in the local or wider area? [Editor adds: Anyone able to comment? Bee mortality is inevitable as individuals age and wear out over the season, but could this recent observation be evidence of disease related mortality, or an incident such as insecticide misuse?] *** SWIFT DECLINE *** Jo Bramwell: Swift numbers have declined by 47% in the last ten years, and the species is now of serious conservation concern. The RSPB is appealing for records of sightings, with a view to focusing its conservation efforts in areas where swifts are commonly seen and working with the building industry to help birds in buildings. Please go to www.rspb.org.uk/news/details.asp?id=tcm:9-219495 and follow the link to report your sightings. *** Hummingbird Hawk Moths *** Please keep a lookout over the summer for Hummingbird Hawk Moths. http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/species/hawkmoths/index.php Then send in your records to the Bulletin and to the Butterfly Conservation website. http://www.butterfly-conservation.org/sightings/1097/painted_lady_butterfly.html *** OTTERS *** Readers are reminded that all dead Otters should be reported to the Environment Agency on 0800 807060. Mammal records can reported to chris_j_manning@hotmail.com *** BioBlitz 2009 *** Margaret Haggerty: 10th & 11th July, Horncastle Join us for the fourth annual 24-hour recording event at Banovallum House, with Lincolnshire Biodiversity Partnership, Lincolnshire Naturalists’ Union and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. BOOTHBY PAGNELL (NG33 4DG) Keith Smith Wednesday 10th June 2009 (evening.) Walking in my paddock watching our local Barn Owl on its evening hunt saw it catch a mouse, as it took off a Kestrel appeared virtually from nowhere and also grabbed the unfortunate mouse, they both then flew on in this manner with the Kestrel flying completely upside down and clinging on for several hundred yards before they both crashed into an oilseed rape field, they both recovered immediately and flew off, I'm not sure who got the mouse in the end. I might add that the birds where completely oblivious to both myself and my two dogs walking below them. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. LINCOLN John Margetts 10 May 2009 Some lichen records for the Bulletin. These are over a month old, as they can take a bit of identifying. Evernia prunastri Hypogymnnia physodes Melanelia fulginosa fulginosa Parmelia sulcata Parmotrema perlatum - unusual to find this in Lincoln. It grows at Whisby Nature Park (I know of just one location there) and must be elsewhere in Lincolnshire but it is fairly pollution sensitive so its occurrence in the city centre is good news. We heard cuckoos- more than one. Then suddenly one became visible, in flight, joined by TWO more. We saw them more than once on this visit, one perching on a fence post. I have been aware & somewhat concerned at the absence of Ladybirds this year. To date I've seen nil in my garden. At Rimac I saw good quantities of mainly 7 spots in a small area by footpath on west side of reserve, next to fields, probably around 30. Although widespread in Europe, Bombus hypnorum, which has coined the name Tree Bumblebee because of its habit of nesting in tree cavities or bird nestboxes, was first found on the south coast of England in 2001. Since then it has gradually spread north as far as Northumberland (see map below). In Lincolnshire at present we have just one record for the species from Gosberton Clough near Spalding 2008. With records coming in from Yorkshire I'm sure its going unnoticed in this county so please keep an eye out especially in the south and west. So, have you seen one? Or possibly have a photo? Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen "in flower".] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
