Curiously, this plant is in the news this week because of proposals to introduce a potential biological control species to the UK. The public is to be asked to comment. The understanding is that readers get the LNU Bulletin free and in return they give something back in the way of a report or two [or more] over the year. Out of nearly 900 subscribers, less than 50 are regular reporters, but thank goodness they are! Most of these are exceptionally busy people who somehow manage to find time to make a significant contribution. I cannot thank them enough for their VERY WELCOME support. Information from readers makes the Bulletin. Without this it would be pretty thin. Questions or requests for information are fine too. Failing that, please tell someone about us and help our network to grow. Go along to an event we have publicised. Join and support the LNU. Any of these alternatives will be a big help and will make the effort worthwhile. Thanks. Roger *** Hare Poaching *** Oilseed Rape is being harvested now and as the land becomes clear the coursers will be on the lookout for hares to chase. Make sure you know the routine for reporting poaching. Avoid approaching poachers and do not put yourself in danger, but keep details of date, time, place, vehicle registrations and numbers/descriptions of people and dogs. When reporting any crime ask for the Police incident number, as this confirms that your report is on the system and cannot be swept under the carpet. Roger *** Lincolnshire Breeding Swifts Survey *** Andrew Chick writes: There is a joint LBC and LWT Online Lincolnshire Breeding Swift Survey at http://www.lincsbirdclub.co.uk/Articles ... survey.htm Swifts are the masters of the air, able to feed, sleep and even mate on the wing. Every year they travel on a round trip of more than 20,000km to and from southern Africa without once touching the ground. If a recent RSPB report proves correct, in just 20 years time our skylines will no longer echo to the sound of swifts. Since the 1990s, the UK swift population has declined by a massive 40%. With just 36,000 remaining pairs in the UK, the prospect of the species disappearing from Britain within the next two or three decades is a very real one. The main reason for the dramatic fall in numbers is the lack of nesting places in our towns and villages. We are interested in more detailed information about breeding swifts in Lincolnshire so we can estimate if populations of swifts in Lincolnshire have declined in line with the rest of the UK – if you have swifts breeding in your house or have details of swifts breeding in a building near you, please take a few minutes to fill in our online survey at http://www.lincsbirdclub.co.uk/Articles/swifts/swift_survey.htm Every year the Lincolnshire Bird Club collects data on swifts breeding in Lincolnshire, but this year in association with the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, we would like more detailed observations. The online form allows you to supply details of location, building type and roof structure. We are aware that we are NOW reaching the end of the 2009 breeding season, and will be running this survey again in 2010. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. STICKNEY TF322569 Gail Cartwright w/e 25/07/09 blackbird 2 blue tit 3 chaffinch 4 feral pigeons 8 great tit 2 greenfinch 3 house sparrow 5 3rd set of fledglings from our sparrow terrace last week, not sure how many. kingfisher 1 first time I have seen 1 around here magpie 1 pheasant 1m pied wagtail 3 3 fledged from under the bonnet of an old fork lift about 3 weeks ago. robin 2 and 1 juvenile with no tail. swallow 8 and 4 fledglings from our barn last week. wren 1 Unfortunately we have had a wagtail fatality and a young swallow fatality, I heard a bang, went out and a pied wagtail had hit the house, then on Thursday the same with a swallow. I am fairly certain there is another swallows nest higher up inside the barn as there are quite a few swallows flying about and I know there were only 4 fledglings lower down. We usually have 2 nests. On Wednesday I saw a roe deer walking through the corn field next door it was afternoon and broad daylight, I thought they only came out at night. It was walking towards the road but I didnt see where it went. We have had hundreds and hundreds of toads over the last 2 weeks. On several occasions I have not ventured outside because I couldnt do so without treading on some. Also lots of dead ones especially in the barn along the walls in lines as if they were marching. They are tiny, about the size of my little finger nail, there are still a few about. There are quite a few butterflies at the moment, whites and browns. Also bees of different kinds including the red rumped one, but I have only seen 1 ladybird so far. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. Thanks. CARLTON LE MOORLAND Jeremy Hutchinson 24/7/09 Just enjoying a day off at home in Carlton le Moorland, when I noticed how many insects are attracted by a patch of oregano which is currently in bloom. A Comma, several Gatekeepers and Meadow Browns, a Crimson and Gold moth, and a pair of Small Skippers, (which are not often seen in our garden), a Tortoiseshell, one each Painted Lady and Peacock (both of which appeared to be newly-emerged), as well as numerous bumble bees (sorry, cannot identify). Also: Holly Blue, Common Blue, the latter also seldom seen here. I have noticed over the last few days that most of our Swifts seem to have gone, and the few remaining have become silent. I mentioned last year that this seems to happen earlier than it used to, but this is exceptionally early. GRANTHAM. David Clarke A friend was watching the Peregrine Falcons on St Wulfrum's Church Grantham a few weeks ago and noticed something fall down from the church from where the birds were sitting. He retrieved what was left of a small bird and on the only leg left was a ring. The bird was a female Quail ringed on the 10-05-2009 at TIELT WEST-VLAANDEREN BELGIUM. I had an email from Belgium explaining that Quail are rung at night when they are on migration to the UK. One ringer caught and rung over two hundred Quail this year. I have never seen or heard a Quail in the Grantham area and would be interested from any Bulletin readers if they know of any? I have spoken to several game shooters about this but none had seen any for several years. Or another question to our bird experts, Do the Peregrines travel long distances from their nests hunting? LINWOOD WARREN John Margetts 19-07-09 Lichens Cladonia coniocraea Cladonia fimbriata Flavoparmelia caperata Hypogymnia physodes Parmelia sulcata LONG BENNINGTON SK 822 461 Barry Johnson 25/7/09 Male House Sparrow and Female Tree Sparrow fledged family of Tree-house Sparrows this morning Editor asks - is such hybridisation often reported? Barry replies: This is unusual but I don’t believe that it is particularly rare. I have had them here before a few years ago and have heard of a hybrid male over the border in Notts (also a few years ago). It normally happens when one species finds itself isolated from potential mates of its own species, as is the case here. I have a good population of Tree Sparrows around the farm but House Sparrows are only very rarely seen with 3 probably being the site record and they usually only stay for a few days, currently there is only this one male House Sparrow that has been present throughout the spring. Being significantly larger than the male Tree Sparrows he was able to take over a nest site in a barn wall after the first brood of Tree Sparrows fledged from there and I suspect that he might even have stolen the original female. I have noticed many Water Vole droppings on floating logs etc and on a early morning paddle along the channel on the 16th saw an adult busy eating on the edge of floating vegetation and again later a very black young one. The best views I have had for some time. THEDDLETHORPE John Cowell on 19/7/09 I noticed today that there are many ladybirds out on the Samphire on Theddlethorpe Beach. Is this unusual, or is it a fact that they drift out on the westerley wind and hopefully breeze back in again when the sea breeze from the east picks up? I think we should do a study of these beautiful insects next year? Although widespread in Europe, Bombus hypnorum, which has coined the name Tree Bumblebee because of its habit of nesting in tree cavities or bird nestboxes, was first found on the south coast of England in 2001. Since then it has gradually spread north as far as Northumberland (see map below). In Lincolnshire at present we have just one record for the species from Gosberton Clough near Spalding 2008. With records coming in from Yorkshire I'm sure its going unnoticed in this county so please keep an eye out especially in the south and west. So, have you seen one? Or possibly have a photo? If so, visit http://www.bwars.com/bombus_hypnorum_map.htm for further info on this bumblebee, how to recognise it, and details on how to report your sightings. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
