LNU Wildnews Bulletins are available on: http://rogerparsons.info/bulletinportal.html Note: Each address contains the relevant date. Views expressed by contributors are not necessarily those of the Lincolnshire Naturalists Union or any associated organisations. Please make contact via the LNU Website: http://www.lnu.org/ or e-mail wildlifenews@lnu.org, or contact the Editor to join up and contribute articles or reports. [Or cancel!] E-mail: rparsons@enterprise.net ============================================ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Curse of Bulkmail *** It appears that my email problems are not yet over. A number of readers, notably those of hotmail, freeserve and Yahoo, are being blocked, seemingly because the Bulletin is coming via T-mobile. If you hear of anyone bemoaning the lack of a Bulletin, please refer them to the Bulletin Portal where they will be able to find it. http://rogerparsons.info/bulletinportal.html *** Waes Hael *** Yuletide Greetings to all readers and warmest thanks to all who have contributed to the Bulletin over the course of the year. Please keep the information flowing. *** Bitter Cold and Strong Winds *** The winter weather over the past few days should trigger some interesting wildlife reports. Animal tracks in the snow may tell you what has been about. Today we found tracks of muntjac, fox, long tailed field mouse, and several tracks of brown hare including places where they have been boxing and going mad. Signs of active moles also show up well in the snow. There may be a change in your garden birds, with sightings such as brambling, siskin, redwing and fieldfare. Eyes open! *** Winter Solstice *** The shortest day, the Winter Solstice, occurs on 21st December, the official start of winter, one of them anyway. For your latest postcode forecast see: See: http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/ We are in the middle of the meteor shower. Keep a lookout for the Ursids. I managed to spot a couple of rather feeble Geminids last weekend. We do have a partial lunar eclipse coming up on the 31st, but it is one of those feeble affairs, hardly observable. [Paul Money says the next half decent lunar eclipse will be on December 21st 2010!] Roger *** LNU Events Diary *** For all LNU meetings also see section 11 below and www.lnu.org/events.php Indoor Meetings are held on Saturdays at the Whisby Education Centre, Whisby Nature Park, Moor Lane, Thorpe on the Hill, Lincoln and start at 2pm. Saturday, January 09, 2010 Grisly Biology - an Introduction to Forensic Entomology Dr Dorothy Gennard is principal lecturer in Biological Science at Lincoln University. *** Little Owls *** Jeremy Hutchinson writes: Just read Anne Goodall's note about Little Owls. For the record they are by no means uncommon in the Bassingham/ Carlton le Moorland, Norton Disney/Stapleford area. When I'm at home I hear them most days at all hours, but especially dusk and after dark, but not unusually in daylight too. *** Whooper Swans *** Subject: Whooper Swans Those who enjoyed the spectacle of the seals at Donna Nook may also enjoy seeing the Whooper Swans at Welney in Norfolk. Another stunning experience, if a somewhat longer drive. See: http://new.wwt.org.uk/visit-us/welney ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Wildlife Highlights ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Birdnews from FOCALPOINT *** UPDATED DETAILS. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. DONNA NOOK news. Rob Lidstone-Scott writes on 15/12/09: Latest numbers give a pup total for the year of 1357 (compared with 1318 for last year). The big exodus has started - over 600 cows left in the two weeks to 11 December. We've had a flock of c90 snow buntings in the area this week. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. RSPB WASH Reserves - Frampton Marsh and Freiston Shore http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/f/framptonmarsh/index.asp http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/f/freistonshore/index.asp Recent sightings November 2009 Paul French Frampton Marsh The highly mobile Great White Egret finally made it onto the new habitats on the 5th, and stayed for one afternoon before disappearing into The Wash again. A Black Brant was found with Dark-bellied Brents on the saltmarsh on the 13th and stayed until the 17th at least. The first Water Pipit of the winter arrived on the 2nd, and there were up to four on the 22nd. Other passerines included a small flock of Snow Buntings. Initially there were 10 on the saltmarsh on the 11th, then one on the scrapes on 11th-13th before eight were on the scrapes on 22nd and 14 were there on 29th. Between 1-3 Lapland Buntings were present all month, but mobile and elusive around the entire reserve. Up to 45 Twite were on the saltmarsh from the 11th. Also on the saltmarsh, a survey on the 11th found 256 Rock Pipits, presumably all of the Scandinavian race, littoralis. Duck numbers gradually built up throughout the month as water levels rose, and up to 250 Teal and 140 Wigeon were present by the months end. A Short- eared Owl hunted the marsh on 7th and 11th, and there were up to 3 each of Hen Harriers, Marsh Harriers, Merlins and Peregrines. Freiston Shore Wader numbers started to go down slightly, although there were still 10,000 Knot, 2000 Black-tailed Godwits and over 2500 Dunlin on the reserve early in the month. A Whooper Swan stayed on the lagoon and wetland all month, and was joined by a family group of six on the 19th. Regular Peregrine and Merlin hunted over the reserve, and there were at least two Hen Harriers in the area. A Mediterranean Gull flew south on the 19th. Seawatching in northerly winds on the 30th produced a Little Auk, 3 Pomarine Skus, 4 Great Skuas, 88 Common Scoters, 5 Scaup, 34 Eiders and 55 Kittiwakes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen "in flower".] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
