Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Back on Track *** I am glad to tell you I am back in action. My pc needed some routine care, so thanks to you all for putting up with the delay. Keep those reports coming. As the winter starts properly we could get some interesting records. Roger *** Heads up - Meteors *** We are in the middle of the Geminid meteor shower which will be followed by the Ursids peaking on the 22nd. If out at night, keep a lookout for them. *** Mailfails *** Please pass on this message if you hear anyone complaining that the Bulletin has not turned up. This is mainly the hotmail users, who will need to collect their Bulletins from the website. A few users of other service providers have also experienced similar problems. This seems to be due to the temporary T-mobile system I am using. Sorry. That will change eventually. Roger *** Swan Census *** Anne Gopodall writes: The next Lincoln area quarterly census will take place [this] weekend, 12/13 December. As usual we shall be aiming to cover The River Witham from North Hykeham to Southrey and the Foss Dyke to at last Saxilby, with all the (major) drains, delphs, fens, washlands, pits, ponds and lakes in-between. However, there are as usual quite a number of private fishing lakes we don't get to, and there is potential for swans to be wintering on washlands we don't know about. Therefore, as usual, PLEASE make a note of any swans you see in this area in the next two weeks, and send them in to this bulletin. The indications are that we could be a few birds short this month. At this time last year there were wintering herds grazing by day on Nocton Fen, Branston Fen, Stainfield Fen, and along the Barlings. The Nocton herd began to form in the middle of last month, but numbers are low; the others haven't formed yet. On the other hand, there were good numbers of swans on the Apex Pits last month, which weren't there last year at this time. So there is still very much we don't know yet, and we need all the eyes there are. Meantime, we have just received news from the BTO that one of the swans we ringed on the Brayford Pool in August last year, as a moulting second year female bird, was found dead at Attenborough Nature Reserve in September this year, thought to have been killed by a fox. This movement is consistent with what we expect from known swan behaviour; the Brayford herd are non- breeders which must move away and find a mate and territory when they are old enough to breed. This is the first movement reported so far though; all other ring recoveries have been local, usually birds flying into power lines, or most recently, the link bridge over the west end of the Brayford. *** Grimsby & Cleethorpes LWT *** Carolyn Lovely writes: Monday 14th December 2009 local apiarist Claire Wilkinson will be talking about the plight of the bumble bee. We will learn about the importance of providing nectar in our garden and also about propolis and its uses. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and takes place in the Banqueting Room of Grimsby Town Hall. Admission £2.00. Trust stall, raffle and festive refreshments will be provided. All are welcome. Contact Jennie Redpath - 01472 502858 for further details. *** Barton Area Group Wildlife Trust *** Viv Rowett writes: Barton area group Wildlife Trust events Sunday field trip, Welney WWT 13th December 2009 Note this is an 8am start from Barton Leader – John Robinson (01652 637952) Today's field trip takes us down to the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire border to see one of the country's wildlife spectacles. 3,000 Whooper swans from Iceland join over 4,500 Bewick's swans arriving from Arctic Russia to take refuge amongst thousands of ducks, geese and other waterbirds. WWT Welney offers beautiful walks around the reserve, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the untamed beauty of the wetland reserve and witness the ever changing wetland wildlife. Observation hides, Toilets, Shop and Café. Suitable for family groups (but note that it is a 220 mile 5 hour round trip drive). Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. Whisby Nature Park Whisby 29/11/09 Phil Porter reports: There was a wintering male Blackcap at Coot Lake on 9th. Only one sighting of 2 buzzards has been recorded, on 2nd. 60 Carrion Crows at Grebe Lake was a remarkable count on 7th. Single Chiffchaffs were present up to 26th. A Coal Tit fed at the bird tables on 26th On WeBS count weekend 20th/21st, only 258 Coots were at Whisby but a massive 632 were counted in the Apex Pit complex. 29 Cormorants were also at Apex Pit at this time. A record 256 Gadwall were counted at Grebe Lake and Willow Lake on 20th. 1-2 Goldcrests were recorded on several occasions, mostly at Grebe Lake. Goldeneye numbers increased from 1-2 at the start of the month to 12 by 20th. Single Green Sandpipers were seen on two occasions. There was just one Grey Wagtail record. Kingfishers were frequent, mostly singles but culminating in 3 at Grebe Lake on 23rd. The best count of Lesser Redpolls was 21 on 20th at Grebe Lake but there were also 12 at Apex Pit on 9th. An amazing 70 Linnets were counted at Teal Lake on 26th. 101 Mallards on 20th is a good count here. An adult Mediterranean Gull was identified at Millennium Green Lake, North Hykeham on 25th. In a most unusual occurrence, 61 Pink-footed Geese were seen on Teal Lake on 20th. These migrant geese hardly ever rest on waters in this area. A further 26 flew east on 27th. 92 Pochard were counted at Willow Lake on 2nd. Only 35 remained by 20th. One female and two young male Red-crested Pochards were seen at Willow Lake from 12th. Only the males remained by 20th. A different male bird was seen at Apex Pit on 15th and 22nd. A drake Ring-necked Duck was found at Apex Pit on 21st. The following day it moved to Grebe Lake where the only previous record was from 6th May 1991. It was last seen at Teal Lake on 25th. There were 20 Shovelers at Grebe Lake on 4th but with rising water levels only 3 remained by 29th. Roosting Starlings at Grebe Lake increased from about 100 in the first week to 1000 by month’s end. Around 100 Teal have been consistently seen at Grebe Lake feeding on weed seeds as Bruce’s Island gradually floods. 120 Tufted Ducks counted on 20th is a fairly moderate number for Whisby. A vocal Water Rail was to be heard at Grebe Lake from 3rd-7th. 6 Whooper Swans flew north on 7th while 7 were at Apex Pit on 9th. A moderate 64 Wigeon were counted on 20th. 1-2 Willow Tits have been seen on three occasions. An adult Yellow-legged Gull has been present on most days 3rd-22nd. The last Common Darters were recorded on 20th, and the last Migrant Hawkers on 8th. The annual Bee Orchid Count yielded 295 with most of these at Redland’s old yard. This is quite a small total by the standard of some recent years. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. RSPB WASH Reserves - Frampton Marsh and Freiston Shore http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/f/framptonmarsh/index.asp http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/f/freistonshore/index.asp Recent sightings November 2009 Paul French Frampton Marsh The highly mobile Great White Egret finally made it onto the new habitats on the 5th, and stayed for one afternoon before disappearing into The Wash again. A Black Brant was found with Dark-bellied Brents on the saltmarsh on the 13th and stayed until the 17th at least. The first Water Pipit of the winter arrived on the 2nd, and there were up to four on the 22nd. Other passerines included a small flock of Snow Buntings. Initially there were 10 on the saltmarsh on the 11th, then one on the scrapes on 11th-13th before eight were on the scrapes on 22nd and 14 were there on 29th. Between 1-3 Lapland Buntings were present all month, but mobile and elusive around the entire reserve. Up to 45 Twite were on the saltmarsh from the 11th. Also on the saltmarsh, a survey on the 11th found 256 Rock Pipits, presumably all of the Scandinavian race, littoralis. Duck numbers gradually built up throughout the month as water levels rose, and up to 250 Teal and 140 Wigeon were present by the months end. A Short- eared Owl hunted the marsh on 7th and 11th, and there were up to 3 each of Hen Harriers, Marsh Harriers, Merlins and Peregrines. Freiston Shore Wader numbers started to go down slightly, although there were still 10,000 Knot, 2000 Black-tailed Godwits and over 2500 Dunlin on the reserve early in the month. A Whooper Swan stayed on the lagoon and wetland all month, and was joined by a family group of six on the 19th. Regular Peregrine and Merlin hunted over the reserve, and there were at least two Hen Harriers in the area. A Mediterranean Gull flew south on the 19th. Seawatching in northerly winds on the 30th produced a Little Auk, 3 Pomarine Skus, 4 Great Skuas, 88 Common Scoters, 5 Scaup, 34 Eiders and 55 Kittiwakes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. News from Bardney Limewoods NNR http://microsites.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Limewoods/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reports from the following locations will now be posted here to give an overview of Limewoods ecology. The NNR includes the following sites: Chambers Farm Wood (please detail specfic area when reporting e.g. Ivy Wood, Little Scrubbs Meadow etc); College Wood, Cocklode & Great West Woods, Hardy Gang Wood, Newball Wood, Scotgrove Wood, Southrey Wood, Wickenby Wood Other woods included in the NNR but without public access: Stainfield Wood; Stainton & Fulnetby Woods (access by public bridleway only) Adrian Royle's website for photos of species from the Limewoods. http://www.flickr.com/photos/adiroyle/sets/72157616635241942/ Limewoods – Anne Goodall reports: Still good numbers of lapwings on Stainfield Fen, Fiskerton Fen and Bardney Dairies, as well as other sites, and all the good hawthorn hedges still hold wintering thrushes. Triggered by a couple of sightings of little owls in the last year, which reminded me how rarely I see one in this area, I've recently begun to collate all the records of this species for the Limewoods back to the last Atlas, 1981-89. Sure enough, they do seem to be scarce. (This was borne out by the Atlas, which shows them widespread in the Fens, including the Witham Fens, and over the Marshes, but scarce elsewhere.) However, they are also quite difficult to see; sightings are usually by chance. So, if anyone has a record from anywhere in the Limewoods for the last 20 years which has NOT been reported to the Bird Club, please post it on the bulletin. Many thanks in advance! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work.
